Minister Sexwale to hand over 54 houses in Coligny, North West

Human Settlements Minister Tokyo Sexwale will on Tuesday officially hand over 54 housing units constructed by women for the vulnerable families in Coligny, North West. He will be accompanied by the North West Premier Maureen Modiselle, Human Settlements MEC Desbo Mohono, MECs from other provinces and the Mayor for the Ditsobotla Local Municipality.

The 54 houses are part of the 1 956 houses committed by the North West Department of Human Settlements as part of the National Women’s Build 2010 project. The objective of National Women’s Build programme is to commemorate one of the largest demonstrations in this country’s history, where thousands of women marched to the Union Building in 1956 in protest against the extension of passes to women by the apartheid regime. The 54 houses which have been built in Coligny symbolise the 54th anniversary of the women’s march.

The project, which seeks to benefit vulnerable women in the province, was launched by the Premier of the North West, Ms Maureen Modiselle, MEC for Human Settlements, Ms Desbo Mohono and the Mayor of Ditsobotla Local Municipality, Ms Itumeleng Lethoko in Coligny three weeks ago.

Amongst the 54 beneficiaries is Mmami Motlhokwa (109) who lives with her 62 year-old child and seven grandchildren, in a two roomed shack. Ms Motlhokwa had fourteen children. Ten of them have passed away. Her husband passed away 41 years ago.

The Department of Human Settlements is using National Women’s Build Programme to work with other sectors of society to reduce housing backlogs in the province and thus enhancing access to decent housing for vulnerable families in the country.
