Minister Pandor to hand over mobile labs to schools in Muden, Greytown, KwaZulu-Natal

The Minister of Science and Technology, Naledi Pandor, will hand over mobile laboratories to three schools in Muden, just outside Greytown, in KwaZulu-Natal, on Friday 16 July 2010.

The event will take place at Mount Ernestina Combined School from 13h00. The other two schools that will receive the laboratories are Sheshisamsamo and Siphakeme.

The visit to the area was prompted by a local community organisation, Zibambeleni, which requested the minister to donate laboratories to the local schools.

Donated by Sasol, each mobile laboratory, or cart, is fitted with high-quality educational software for teaching theory, a USB camera, and a projector. Teachers will be able to perform low-cost science experiments and demonstrations while projecting live images, captured by the USB camera, onto a wall in the classroom creating an interactive learning environment.

The carts bring a new dimension to science by enhancing learners’ activities and reduce the risks associated with experimenting with hazardous chemicals. Each cart can perform about 131 biology, chemistry and physical science experiments.

Before handing over the carts, Minister Pandor, accompanied by the KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Social Development Meshack Radebe and the Mayor of the Umvoti Municipality Petros Ngubane, will conduct door-to-door visits to some homes within the municipality as part of the government’s public participation programme.

Media are invited to form part of the minister’s entourage. Transport will be provided from Durban.
