Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele, as part of October Transport Month, will visit a roadblock and deliver the keynote address at a Roads Indaba in the Eastern Cape tomorrow, Thursday, 14 October 2010.
The roadblock forms part of South Africa’s “Make Roads Safe” campaign and the new National Rolling Traffic Law Enforcement Plan (NREP), which became effective on 1 October 2010. The NREP will see law enforcement officers across the country stop and check no less than one million vehicles and drivers every month.
Minister Ndebele will be accompanied by amongst others, Eastern Cape Transport MEC Ms Ghishma Barry.

Thereafter, Minister Ndebele will join Eastern Cape Premier Ms Noxolo Kiviet and Roads and Public Works MEC Ms Pemmy Majodina at a Provincial Roads Indaba at the International Convention Centre in East London. The Indaba aims to improve inter-governmental cooperation around the issue of roads maintenance and construction.

Delegates to the Indaba will include elected and technical officials from the three levels of government and representatives from business, agriculture and the construction industry. These delegates will also look at the current state of the roads in the province, adopting a road and bridge prioritisation model and future funding for roads infrastructure projects.
