Tomorrow, Western Cape Minister for Education Donald Grant will be attending a Western Cape Education (WCED) Literacy and Numeracy Roadshow meeting in Manenberg.
Since April, officials from the WCED have been travelling across the province to discuss the latest literacy and numeracy results of Grade 6 learners.
The Literacy and Numeracy Roadshow involves a series of meetings with principals, educators, parents and communities to discuss the performance of primary school learners in the 2009 Grade 6 tests, as well as, inform them on how to improve on these results. Providing this information to parents also enables them to hold their schools accountable for their children’s performance.
Tomorrow evening Minister Donald Grant will be attending a Roadshow community meeting held at Phoenix Secondary.
Here, schools from some of the Metro Central areas will be present, such as Manenberg, Athlone, Gugulethu, Hanover Park and Landsdowne.

During the course of the day, 22 July 2010, officials will meet with educators and principals from the following schools to discuss their results, to congratulate those that improved and to determine strategies going forward to improve literacy and numeracy.
These schools include:
Zonnebloem Girls Practical School
- Results at this school increased substantially, specifically in numeracy with learners improving their numeracy results by 40%. In 2007, they achieved 19%, in 2009 this increased to 59%.
- In literacy, the results increased from 69% in 2007, to 82.1% in 2009.
Zimasa Primary School
- Officials are visiting this school to discuss how they can improve on their results.
- Their numeracy results are low, showing only minor improvement in their results from 0.6% in 2007 to 0.7% in 2009.
- In Literacy, their results decreased by a concerning 20.2%, from 39.8% to 19.6% in 2009.
Bonga Lower Secondary
- Results at this school increased substantially, specifically in literacy, with learners improving their literacy results by 62.5%. In 2007, they achieved 25%, in 2009 this increased to 87.5%.
