Minister Dlamini Zuma to represent South Africa at the first Conference of African Ministers for civil registration

South African Home Affairs Minister, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, will today, Wednesday, 11 August depart for Addis Ababa where she will represent the country at the first conference of African Ministers responsible for civil registration scheduled for 13 to 14 August 2010 at the United Nations Conference Centre in Ethiopia.

The African Ministers Conference is expected to develop a proposal for a continental medium-term regional civil registration and vital statistical plan for recommendation and adoption by the African Union Heads of State and government.

The conference is convened by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, African Development Bank, the African Union and hosted by Ethiopia under the theme: "Improved Civil Status information for efficient Public Administration and Generation of statistics for National Development and millennium development goals' (MDG) monitoring in Africa".

The ministerial conference is being preceded by a meeting of continental experts which began its deliberations on Tuesday, 10 to 12 August and is expected to make recommendations to the ministers' conference for discussion and ratification.

In this regard and among others, the African Ministers Conference is expected to discuss:

  • the legal, administrative and statistical purposes and functions of civil registration and vital statistics system
  • management and operations of civil registration
  • generation and use of health and demographic statistics
  • challenges and opportunities for improved civil registration
  • importance of causes of death recording, compilation, processing and preparation of national causes of death classification and
  • resource requirements and administration for civil registration
