The Portfolio Committee on Mining will tomorrow Wednesday, 27 October get a briefing from the Alexkor Development Foundation and Namaqua Diamond Fund Trust.
The meeting is a follow up on an oversight visit to various mining communities in the Northern Cape conducted in July where the community in the area complained that they had not benefited since the trusts were established. During the oversight visit the committee looked at the living conditions of the community in the Northern Cape where they discovered that people are living in abject poverty.
The Department of Mineral Resources and two mining companies (Transhex and Alexkor) will brief the committee on the qualitative and financial performances, including audited statements of the Alexkor Development Foundation and Namaqua Diamond Fund Trust. These trusts were established to improve the livelihood of the community.
