Western Cape Economic Opportunities releases tourism statistics, 23 Feb

The Western Cape Government and the City of Cape Town are set to announce the latest visitor numbers for the region.

Alan Winde, MEC of Economic Opportunities, and Councillor Roxanne Hoorn, chairperson of the City of Cape Town’s Portfolio Committee on Tourism, Events and Economic Development, will brief the media on the summer season statistics for the tourism sector.

MEC Winde will also discuss the trends in visitor numbers over the past three years and major investments into the province’s tourism sector. Councillor Roxanne Hoorn will discuss the results of a tourism study undertaken by Grant Thornton on behalf of the City of Cape Town.

MEC Winde today (19 February 2015) met with National Tourism MEC Derek Hanekom, Dr Taleb Rifai, the Secretary-General of the United Nations Worlds Tourism Organisation (WTO) and David Scowsill, the President of the World Travel and Tourism Council.

The UN and WTO are in South Africa for a symposium.

“They wanted to know more about our tourism offering. We also spoke about Home Affairs MEC Malusi Gigaba’s new visa regulations, which are a major concern for the industry” said MEC Winde.

Monday’s press conference will be held at the newest space in the V&A Waterfront, Workshop 17. As one of Africa’s leading attractions, the V&A Waterfront attracted 23.1 million visitors last year and contributed R29.3 billion to the Western Cape’s Gross Geographic Product – the provincial equivalent of Gross Domestic Product.

The Western Cape welcomes 3 million international visitors annually and is establishing itself as a leading all-year round destination.
