SAPS hosts 4th International Conference on Chemical Precursors

The South African Police Service will, in conjunction with the French Embassy in South Africa, be hosting the 4th International Conference on Chemical Precursors, from 28 – 31 October 2013, under the theme “Creating collaborative international partnerships within the Chemical Pharmaceutical Industry”.

The combating of illicit drugs is amongst the top priorities for the South African Police Service (SAPS). A Chemical Monitoring Programme was established to prevent the distribution of chemicals for the manufacturing of illicit narcotics and it has been instrumental in the identification of several clandestine drug laboratories.

The conference will comprise of delegates from the Chemical Industry, Pharmaceutical Industry, Southern African Regional Police Chiefs Cooperation Organisation (SARPCCO) within the SADC Region and relevant Government Departments. Subject experts from countries such as France, USA, Great Britain, Canada and Japan will address the conference on the trends in their respective countries.

The four day conference aims to meet the following objectives:

  • Broadening the understanding of the nature and sources of precursors;
  • Engaging an investigative approach in illicit trade and use of precursors;
  • Enhancing effective border control measures to minimise the movement of precursors; and
  • Enhancing the Regional and International sharing of information on the threat posed by illicit precursor activities.

The outcome of the Conference is to develop a strategic plan in collaboration with the regional and international stakeholders to combat the scourge of drugs within our communities.

Members of the media are cordially invited to attend a media briefing at the closing of the conference.
