Minister Mbombo to highlight the Western Cape Government’s recommendations on Minister’s Gordhan’s Initiation Policy to help curb initiation deaths

On Monday, 14 July 2014, Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Dr Nomafrench Mbombo, will be announcing the Western Cape Government’s recommendations to the National Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs on its draft National Policy on the Customary Practice of Initiation in South Africa.

The Western Cape government has recently submitted its recommendations on this national draft policy to Minister Gordhan on the basis of our own Initiation Framework and Protocol which we developed in 2011 and the experience we have had throughout the years in managing fatalities emanating from botched circumcision rituals.

Minister Mbombo will be unpacking these recommendations and announcing the measures the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, in conjunction with the Department of Health, have taken to ensure that we limit the death of our initiates in the province.

Our submission comes at a time when we have seen the death of many of our initiates across the country.
