Department of Environmental Affairs briefing on alien & invasive alien species

The Department of Environmental Affairs invites members of the media to a briefing on the National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act, 2004 and the recently published for comment Regulations related to alien and listed invasive species, in particular, trout.

Invasive alien species are species that are introduced into an area in which they did not naturally occur, and have been able to out-compete indigenous (and other) species. The impact of this can be devastating.

The purpose of the published Regulations is to prevent the illegal introduction of alien and potentially invasive species into the country, and to regulate listed invasive species and potentially invasive species within the country.  Invasive species can have a profound impact on the environment, biological diversity, the economy and ecosystems and their services.

The media briefing will take place as follows:

Date: Monday 19 May 2014
Time: 11h00
Venue: Imbizo Media Room, 90 Plein Street, Cape Town

NB: Please note that there will be a video link to GCIS Tshedimosetso House, Pretoria
