Critical local government issues on the agenda as newly appointed Minister Pravin Gordhan set to engage with SALGA NEC tomorrow

The South African Local Government Association (SALGA) National Executive Committee will convene a meeting tomorrow at the Southern Sun International Airport and will meet with newly appointed COGTA Minister, Mr Pravin Gordhan.

Tomorrow’s meeting will focus on critical issues facing local government and issues to be discussed with the Minister include:

  • The determination on the upper limits of salaries of senior managers in local government and councillors
  • Unfunded  and underfunded mandates in local government
  • Interventions and Interventions bill in particular placing municipalities under administration (section 139)
  • Public Administration Bill which was passed the NCOP and National Assembly in March 2014
  • Municipal Property Rates Amendment Bill
  • Devolution of the Housing function to accredited municipalities
  • Consequences and accountability framework to address accountability and oversight in municipalities
  • The Reform of the Electricity Industry

The SALGA NEC meets bi-monthly and Minister Pravin Gordhan will meet with the leadership of local government for the first time since assuming his portfolio as Minister of Co-operative  Governance and Traditional Affairs.

The Minister of Higher Education, Dr Blade Nzimande who will engage with the SALGA on matter relating to improving capacity within municipalities and the Minister of Social Development will also grace tomorrow's NEC meeting.
