Media advisory: Minister Naledi Pandor to honour women scientists

As part of celebrating Women's Month, the Minister of Science and Technology Naledi Pandor, will deliver the keynote address at the Women in Science Awards on Friday, 21 August 2009.

The Department of Science and Technology (DST) initiated the Women in Science Awards in 2003, to recognise and honour the achievements of women within the South African science, engineering and technology fields.

The department also seeks to provide motivation for increased participation of women scientists in research as well as providing role models to encourage young women to pursue careers in science, engineering and technology.

Minister Pandor will also announce the winners of the 2009 Women in Science Awards at this event. This year's focus is on Natural Sciences and Engineering.

* Distinguished Woman Scientist Award in the area of Natural Sciences and Engineering
* Achiever Award for a Woman Scientist in Industry
* Achiever Award for a Woman Scientist in Indigenous Knowledge Systems and Local Innovation
* Best Emerging Young Woman Scientist Award in the area of Natural Sciences and Engineering
* Women Scientist Fellowships
* TATA Africa Women Scientist Fellowship
