MEC Yawa to open learner competition to explore road safety solutions

Eighty learners from high schools across the North West province are to participate in the annual provincial Participatory Education Technique (PET) programme competition to be held at 10h00 on Friday, 22 October 2010, at the Ben Marais City Hall in Rustenburg .

North West MEC for Public Safety, Howard Yawa is scheduled to deliver the keynote address at the opening of the competition. The main objective of the PET as a national flagship programme is to encourage learners to identify road safety related problems affecting their communities and to finding solutions by way of research hereby empowering them with a hands on opportunity to solve their community road safety problems.

The rollout of the project piloted last year with support from the Road Traffic Management Corporation is directed at grade 10 and 11 high school learners. It is implemented this year by the Provincial Department of Public Safety in partnership with the Department of Education.

Research workshops were conducted by the provincial Department of Public Safety in August to empower participating school teams, who are to be adjudicated on models and presentations illustrating their community road safety problem and researched solutions.

Last year’s provincial competition was won by Mayflower Education College from Potchefstroom. Winners of this year’s competition will represent the North West at the national competition to be held as from 27 to 29 November 2010 in Gauteng .
