MEC visits rabies outbreak Sophiatown vaccination campaign following the outbreak of rabies in the South of Johannesburg

MEC for Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Ms Nandi Mayathula-Khoza will visit a vaccination point in Sophiatown this afternoon at 15h30.

MEC will also encourage community members in the area to vaccinate their pets as Johannesburg is hit by the rabies outbreak. This follows a newly confirmed outbreak in Dobsonville, Soweto over the weekend in addition to the outbreaks in Eldorado and Kibler Park last week. The department has reacted swiftly and already done 'ring vaccinations' around each outbreak.

MEC is concerned about these recent outbreaks and calls on people to note the importance of vaccinating pets and seeking medical attention immediately after being bitten.

MEC will visit the following vaccination points this afternoon in Sophiatown:

Venues:

  • Sophiatown Shopping Centre, Corner Edward and Millar Street
  • Union Sports Ground, Eric Street next to Sophiatown Police Station

Time: 15h30 to 16h30
Dates: 6 September 2010

Everyone is encouraged to bring their pets for vaccination. All dogs and cats over the age of three months that were not vaccinated in the last month must be vaccinated. Please take note that this is a free service.
