MEC Mbatha-Mthimkhulu to launch women football club development programme

Women’s football in the community of Sedibeng is set to take a different shape when the Gauteng MEC for Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Nelisiwe Mbatha-Mthimkhulu in partnership with South African Football Association (SAFA) Sedibeng launch the women football club development programme.

The launch, which will be held at George Thabe Stadium in Sharpeville on Friday 2 October 2009 from 10h00, marks the establishment and strengthening of existing clubs and ensuring talented women footballers are channelled into competitive sport.

The development programme, which is being launched as part of the Women’s Month celebrations, will focus on women football development to capacitate and strengthen their Women Football Associations in the various regions.

Ex-professional players from SAFA Sedibeng will conduct coaching clinics to enable developing players to take their game to the next level. They will also give advice on what it means to be a professional soccer player. The launch will include a game between Lesedi Shooting Stars and Going up Academy and the two women football teams are currently on the programme.

“We hope that through this programme we will be able to build a pool of skilled players for the success of women football in the country. Above that we also want to build capacity of women football administrators, coaches and technical staff,” says Gauteng MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Nelisiwe Mbatha-Mthimkhulu.
