The MEC for Health in KwaZulu-Natal, Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo, together with ABSA bank are today, delivering 20 wheelchairs to Zinto Zimanukwenzeka community care centre in Ladysmith.
"Our government has taken strides and works towards ensuring equal opportunities and promotion of human rights for people with disabilities, especially those who are poor.
"We are also committed to work to promoting early intervention and identification of disability, especially for children. It is this gesture by ABSA bank that enjoins us in focusing on enhancing the quality of life for people with disabilities and their families, meeting basic needs and ensuring inclusion and participation," says the MEC for Health.
The department ascribes to community based rehabilitation which promotes collaboration among community leaders, people with disabilities, their families, and other concerned citizens to provide equal opportunities for all people with disabilities in the community.
This approach is implemented through the combined efforts of people with disabilities themselves, their families, organisations and communities, and the relevant governmental and non-governmental health, education, private sector, social and other services.
The MEC added: We must promote the rights of people with disabilities to live as equal citizens within the community, to enjoy health and well being, to participate fully in educational, social, cultural, religious, economic and political activities".
