MEC Ghishma Barry to launch eight village committees in Qumbu as part of Womens Month programme

As part of the Department of Safety and Liaison’s Women’s Month programme, Eastern Cape MEC for Transport, Safety and Liaison, Ghishma Barry, will officially launch eight village committees at Caba village in Qumbu tomorrow at 12h00.

The initiative is in line with the department’s mass mobilisation strategy against crime, which seeks to ensure that communities are actively involved in the fight against crime.

The Caba village is facing a challenge of crime, especially stock theft, and there is no nearest police station. Presently, the community is serviced by the Sulenkama police station. Through this initiative, the department will ensure:

* provision of a safe and secure environment through having vibrant community policing structures
* good police and community relations
* contribution to the provincial government’s rural development pilot project, which is currently underway at Mhlontlo municipality.

MEC Barry is expected to further hand over reflector jackets, whistles and torches that were donated by the OR Tambo district municipality.
