MEC to brief Nongoma Community about the closure of taxi operations

KwaZulu MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Bheki Cele will meet with the community of Nongoma and other stakeholders at the Nongoma Multi-Purpose Centre on Monday, 8 June 2009, at 10h00 to brief them about the closing of taxi operations in the area.

The MEC is also visiting the area to monitor the situation and assess if passenger needs are being met since the closure of taxi operations. The closure of taxi operations on Thursday, 4 June 2009, is subsequent to the department making numerous appeals and interventions to the association to cease acts of violence and observe the process of the law. Obviously such appeals have landed on deaf ears as the association has continued to be locked in an internal dispute, which has left operators and commuters killed.

"I would like to emphasise that the safety of passengers is our main priority, and we are going to closely monitor the situation in Nongoma, and we promise to work tirelessly to find a solution to this conflict," said Cele.
