MEC Barry to visit West Bank Correctional Centre

As part of her women’s month celebrations, the Eastern Cape MEC for Transport, Safety and Liaison, Ghishma Barry will visit the West Bank Correctional Centre.

The prison, which is the only all female in the province, will see the MEC spend the day with inmates in an attempt to show them that they have not been forgotten by society and that they still have a role to play as women of this country.

The department strongly believes to contributing to the rehabilitation and morale booster of these prisoners and to bring back confidence and humanity in them.

MEC Barry will be joined by MEC Tom of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture and Premier Noxolo Kiviet, who will deliver the key note address, to hand out gift bags, books, clothing, toiletries to inmates and children. According to Barry, she hopes that the visit will be the start of what will end up being a book, which will document the stories of these inmates as to why or how they ended up behind bars.
