Mdladlana addresses 2010 SADC meeting of Ministers and social partners

The enhancement of regional integration in various aspects of labour and employment is set to dominate Labour Minister, Membathisi Mdladlana’s address at the 2010 SADC Employment and Labour Sector meeting of ministers and social partners in Maputo, Mozambique tomorrow (29 April).

Mdladlana will be delivering an opening statement as outgoing chairperson of the SADC Employment and Labour Sector.

The meeting in Maputo, takes place at a time when the global economic and social crisis that started in 2008, has unleashed a deep and broad jobs crisis which impacted even harder on the developing countries especially those with limited resources to cushion the most vulnerable. “In response, SADC Ministers and Social Partners adopted a SADC Declaration on the global financial and economic crisis in Cape Town during April 2009” said Mdladlana. He says the SADC Declaration is in line with the recently adopted International Labour Organisation Document “Recovery from crisis: A Global Jobs Pact”.

The strategic objective of the Global Jobs Pact focuses on placing employment and labour market issues, social protection and respect for workers’ rights at the centre of policies aimed at confronting the crisis.

The 2010 SADC Employment and Labour Sector meeting for Ministers and Social Partners (labour and business) will continue until 30 April 2010.
