Mandela Day celebration at Draaikraal

The MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) in Mpumalanga, Mr Norman Mokoena will be celebrating the Nelson Mandela Day with the community of Draaikraal in Thaba Chweu Municipality. During the celebration, the community will be able to apply for crucial services such as birth certificates and social grants on the spot. In addition, the community will be tested for health matters such as diabetes and eyes for free.

Mandela will be turning 91 years on 18 July. As part of the celebration, people are asked to donate at least 67 minutes of their time in service to their communities. Sixty-seven minutes is a symbolic number, representing the number of years Mr Mandela was actively involved in social activism.

The celebration will be marked by the provision of services to the Draaikraal community in support of the statesman who selflessly contributed to social activism for a period spanning 67 years. COGTA will be celebrating the day in conjunction with the following sector departments:

  • Home Affairs
  • Social Development
  • Health
  • Human Settlements
  • Public Works, Roads and Transport
  • Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism
  • South African Social Security Agency (SASSA)
  • Thaba Chweu Municipality
