Limpopo to host Farm Workers Summit

Background

Farm workers together with domestic workers are some of the most vulnerable section of the South African working class. Whilst a number of measures including legislation, have been put in place to protect them, most still do not enjoy some of the most basic social achievements of the democratic dispensation, such as better wages and improved and fair conditions of employment.

There are several challenges in the sector regarding the welfare and wellbeing of farm workers which should be addressed. Farm workers are also victims of evictions. What makes farm workers more vulnerable is the fact that they are mostly unrepresented.

Despite these challenges, government is committed to the creation of an agricultural sector that offers a future to all those who are involved in it. Government would like to see an inclusive sector with the dynamic contribution as well as corresponding benefit by the workers. This summit will seek ways to improve the welfare of farm workers.

Expected participants include amongst others; farm owners, farm dwellers, farm workers, South African citizenry, organised labour like Food and Allied Workers Union (FAWU) State Departments such as Labour and Agriculture, Human Rights Commission, farmers’ unions (TAU, AgriSA, NAFU etc).

Premier Cassel Mathale will officially open the summit as follows:
