Launch of Northern Cape Women's Month programme

Members of the media are invited to a media briefing by MEC Ms Sylvia Lucas on Wednesday, 28 July 2010.

August 9 is Women’s day and it has led to an annual commemoration of the day in 1956 when 20 000 women marched to the Union Buildings. The commemorative events for August month intend to remind the country about women’s rights issues and the struggle for women emancipation.

The work done over 15 years has shown that while much progress is being made, inequalities between women and men persist in all parts of the country. The African Women’s Decade presents a renewed opportunity for further realisation and improvement of women’s participation. Its goal is to cascade, in concrete terms, the execution of commitments on gender equality and women empowerment from grass roots, local, regional, national and to continental level.

During the press conference the MEC will discuss the objectives and the programmes for the 2010 Women’s Month.
