Invitation to Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) seminar on Women and Elections

The Independent Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) will be hosting a seminar on Women and Elections on 4 August 2009 in Centurion, in celebration of Women’s month.

Date: Tuesday, 4 August 2009
Time: 10h00 to 13h30 (Start 09h30 for 10h00)
Venue: Centurion Lake Hotel, 1001 Lenchen Avenue North, Centurion, Gauteng

The programme for the seminar includes:

* a presentation by the IEC on the participation of women in elections the past 10 years since 1999
* the keynote address by Me Soyata Maïga, member of the African Commission on Human and Peoples Rights and Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Women in Africa.

Women in South Africa constitute the majority on the voters’ roll, 54,88 percent, yet they do not have equal representation in holding public office at all levels. Women’s participation is a prerequisite for free and fair elections.

Against the background of the 2009 national and provincial elections, the theme of the seminar, ‘Participation of Women in Elections’ speaks eloquently to the achievements by women and the challenges facing them.

We will appreciate your confirmation to attend at your earliest convenience, but no later than Monday 3 August 2009
