Ingxoxo: Women in Mining

In commemorating the historic women’s march to the Union Buildings in 1956, the Minister of Mineral Resources, Ms Susan Shabangu, will be hosting Ingxoxo Women in Mining. Ingxoxo is a Zulu word meaning "discussion". The event will be hosted under the theme “Celebrating a legacy whilst forging ahead to brighter future”. The theme is informed by 54 years of women’s struggle, our current socio-economic conditions and the goal of prosperity for women in our country. The main objective of Ingxoxo is to ensure meaningful development of women in the mining industry. Women in the mining industry will be coming together to celebrate Women’s Month by forging a common goal whilst charting a new course for their advancement in a male-dominated.

The hosting of Ingxoxo Women in Mining is very significant, particularly since women will use this platform created by the Minister Shabangu, to

  • share various challenges they face in the industry,
  • discuss specific issues affecting women in the sector,
  • reflect on the success of women miners, and workplace experiences.
