A group of students to leave for Cuba to study medicine

The Department of Health invites journalists to an orientation for a group of students going to Cuba for their studies towards medicine.

A Send Off and Orientation programme for a group of 15 students will be addressed by the MEC for Health, Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo. So far, 144 students have been trained at Cuban universities in medicine and they have joined the army of medical doctors in the province of KwaZulu-Natal.

"I feel as if I'm standing on the backs of all my ancestors. This is a huge opportunity for these young men and women," the MEC says.

"Many young people who want to be doctors are not sure how to get into medicine. Even those with decent grades may not have the money, and even applying to medical school cost a lot. Our country's cooperation with Cuba has made their dream come true".

The department pays $5 000 per year per student as well as $200 per student per year which is for their stipend. On coming back to South Africa, they complete their studies at a local tertiary institution.
