The Western Cape MEC of Human Settlements, Bonginkosi Madikizela, will hand over some of the 250 completed houses in Calitzdorp, Kannaland at 13h00 on 18 February 2013.
The completed project consists of 250 houses, and had a total project cost of R24.5 million. Houses have been allocated in line with the department’s policy of prioritizing the elderly and other special needs.
Government houses cost on average R100 000 each, with R25 000 for services, such as water, and R75 000 for the house. The amounts may vary slightly due to different factors. All the houses are 42m2, and are guaranteed for five years by the National Home Builders Registration council, or NHBRC, for structural defects.
Beneficiaries will also sign a happy letter on occupation, indicating they are happy with the houses, and have six months to report any small defects. Beneficiaries are responsible for regular home maintenance.
All beneficiaries will receive title deeds for their property, which will give them security of tenure, as well as an asset that will increase in value over time, and can be used as collateral for loans.
All media are invited.
