Transport Minister takes Road Accident Fund services to Empangeni

The Minister of Transport, Honourable Dipuo Peters (MP), will take Road Accident Fund (RAF) services on the RAF's flagship campaign "RAF on the Road" to the community of Empangeni in KwaZulu-Natal on Saturday 16 August 2014.The flagship campaign will deliver services directly to the communities of Empangeni when its Durban regional office sets up at the Imbizo Conference Centre.

On the day, eligible community members will be invited to claim directly with the Fund, thus cutting out the middle-man and contingency fees. They will also be given extensive information about RAF services, settlement offers, assisted with claims enquiries and provided with support to rehabilitate accident survivors.

As part of the RAF's Corporate Social Investment projects, scholar patrol uniforms and school shoes will be presented to underprivileged learners at the stakeholder and media briefing session. This activity is aimed at promoting compliance to traffic rules amongst all road users in light of the escalating rate of road crashes and fatalities.

Meanwhile, the RAF and the Department will jointly conduct public consultations in the province as part of the 90 days extension period for the Road Accident Benefit Scheme (RABS) Bill. Draft RABS rules were first published for comment under Board Notice 50 of 2014, in Government Gazette No. 37612, on 9 May 2014.

The proposed RABS Bill provides for a legislative overhaul of the RAF, replacing it with a scheme that reflects fairness and equity based on the principles of social security and social solidarity.
