Transport Deputy Minister to celebrate 20 years of excellent Air Traffic Services

Transport Deputy Minister, Honourable Sindisiwe Chikunga, MP will, on 22 July 2013, celebrate excellent milestones achieved by the Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS), a State Owned Company reporting to the Department of Transport.  The Company will also be celebrating its 20th Anniversary.

The Deputy Minister will be joined by the Chairman of the ATNS Board, Captain Mpho Mamashele and the Board of Directors, ATNS CEO Mr Thabani Mthiyane and executive officials from the Company and the Department of Transport.
In celebrating excellent achievements in air traffic navigation services by the Company, Deputy Minister Chikunga will conduct a site inspection and assessment of key communication, navigation and surveillance aviation infrastructure.

Among the many milestones that the ATNS has achieved in its excellent track record, it is the installation of the Versatile Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) networks which provides ground-to-ground systems that enable voice and data communications within the regions, namely; Southern African Development Community (SADC) and North / East Africa region (NAFISAT).  ATNS is also working with its SADC counterparts in exploring the SADC Upper airspace Control Centre (UACC) in order to promote globalisation and harmonisation of technologies in the region.

It is through these activities that ATNS provides significant contribution to the South African and the continent’s aviation industry, thereby promoting safer skies.

In 2011 and 2012 successively, ATNS won the Best Aviation Training Academy in the World Award and is making great progress in terms of harmonising the African skies and looking at collaborations with neighbouring countries in terms of airspace management.
