Sport and Recreation hosts national school sport championships, 10 to 15 Dec

All provinces gather in Pretoria for the 3rd edition of the National School Sport Championships

The Departments of Sport & Recreation (SRSA) and Basic Education (DBE) will jointly host the 2014 National School Sport Championships scheduled for Pretoria, Gauteng Province, from 10 to 15 December.

Themed ‘Today’s athletes, tomorrow’s legends’, this 3rd edition of the coming together of school learners from all provinces of South Africa, will be contested in 14 different sporting codes, namely; Athletics (Cross-country), Basketball, Chess, Cricket, Football, Gymnastics, Goalball, Netball, Volleyball, Swimming, Table Tennis, Tennis, Hockey and Rugby, as well as four indigenous games, namely; Jukskei, Kgati, Khokho and Morabaraba. The majority of the codes also offer versions played by learners with some form of intellectual impairment or physical disability. The matches of the Championships will be played at 23 venues around the City, with the main centre being the University of Pretoria.

Commenting on the 2014 Championships, Basic Education Minister, Ms Angie Motshekga, said “School Sport is the bedrock for sports in the country. The Department has taken a conscious decision to encourage learners to participate in a variety of sport activities”. On the benefits of sport, she said it “…can unite people, build families, encourage, communities and allow for such a positive mass gathering. Sport provides challenges and adventures, fills vacuums and gives meaning and a sense of purpose to people’s lives”.

“As the bedrock for sport development”, said Sport and Recreation Minister, Mr Fikile Mbalula, “the school sport programme is part of the government’s efforts towards the creation of an Active and Winning Nation. The government is considerate that to create tomorrow’s legends, whose contribution to the sport and recreation landscape will lead to sustainable social cohesion and nation building, today’s athletes need to be supported and their talent nurtured. The national School Sport Championship is therefore the beginning of the journey to a Winning Nation – a nation that conquers its own continent and goes on to compete against the best in the world of sport, and emerge unscathed”.

Today’s athletes, tomorrow’s legends – the journey begins.
