Social Development hosts handover of White Door Centres of Hope in MT Frere, 8 Dec

The Department of Social Development invites the media to the handover of the four White Door Centres of Hope, which is scheduled to take place in Mt Frere on Monday, 8 December 2014.

The Department in partnership with UNAIDS has conducted a study on assessment of the role of culture on HIV, Gender-Based Violence, Gender Equality and how these negatively affect girls and young women. The assessment was part of former Department of Women Children and People with Disabilities gender review of Provincial HIV and TB responses, which is supported by UNAIDS in 2013. The report was handed over by His Majesty, King Madzikane II to the Department of Social Development on the 19th September 2014.

Four White Door of Hope Centres has been established and will be launched in rural areas in the Eastern Cape, of which Mt Frere is one of them and will be hosting. This is a continuation of a partnership between the provincial Department of Social Development and MTN Foundation, to provide accommodation and social services for victims of gender-based violence.

The department has declared 2014 a year of people with disabilities, a call for all of us to protect, promote and uphold the rights of people with disabilities. In partnership with MTN Foundation, the Deputy Minister Hon. Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu, will be handing over an accessible computer laboratory to Impumelelo Centre for Disabled People in Inanda and the surrounding areas in KwaZulu-Natal province.

As we commemorate 16 Days of Activism of No Violence against Women and Children Campaign under the theme: Count Me In: Together Moving a Non-Violent South Africa Forward”.

The handing over of these centre gives effect to this year’s United Nations International Day of Persons with Disabilities’ theme: “The Promise of Technology”.
