SAHRC Chairperson Adv. Mushwana visits the Northern Cape, holds a roundtable on xenophobia

South African Human Rights Commission invites members of the Media to a Roundtable Discussion on Xenophobia.

Chairperson Adv. Lawrence Mushwana is in the Northern Cape this week from Monday until Friday where he will, among others, hold a meeting with the Premier and other stakeholders including the Community in the Northern Cape.

The roundtable follows complaints received by the Commission and issues reported in the media around the ill-treatment and alleged discriminatory treatment of foreign national in the province and across the country. In Port Nolloth, the community alleges that the non- nationals are smuggling drugs and sexually exploiting the youth in the area.

The Commission upholds on protecting the rights of all people including no-nationals. As such, the Commission, as part of its responsibilities, is looking at bringing all stakeholders, including government departments responsible for immigration, NGOs, and community representatives to together at this hearing to find ways of dealing with this problem.
