A revamped food garden for learners with special needs

The Winnie Madikizela Mandela School for Learners with special needs will re-launch its vegetable garden in partnership with the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development’s (GDARD) extension officers.

“Our one household one food garden mantra is not limited to individuals’ homesteads; it extends to communities’ use of public spaces and facilities such as schools and clinics to grow food. We applaud this school for realising the importance of poverty alleviation and self-sustenance,” says GDARD MEC Faith Mazibuko.

An exhibition showcasing hand-made products by learners will form part of the day’s items.

“These products to be sold on the day bear testimony that our learners are capable of earning a decent income. The challenge is for employers to give them a chance like any prospective employee,” says the school Principal Johannes Molefe.

Close to 60 senior phase learners will receive certificates on the day recognising their participation in skills such as pottery, metalwork and woodwork. The media is invited to talk to and witness the abilities of learners often stereotyped and thus discriminated against and denied opportunities to be economically active.
