President to address UNGA75 High-Level Meeting to commemorate International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons

President Cyril Ramaphosa will tomorrow, Friday, 2 October 2020, address a virtual high-level meeting of the United Nations General Assembly to commemorate and promote International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons.

The meeting tomorrow, Friday 02 October 2020, will take place on the sidelines of the 75th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

The annual event at UN General Assembly will provide an opportunity for member states to raise awareness of the threat posed to humanity by nuclear weapons and the necessity for their total elimination in order to mobilise international efforts towards achieving the goal of a nuclear-weapon-free world.

The initiative was pioneered by the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and the occasion is used to promote the NAM’s core positions on nuclear disarmament.

South Africa voluntarily ended its nuclear weapons programme in 1989.

The details of the Summit are as follows:
Time: 16h00 – 24h00 (President Ramaphosa is expected to deliver his remarks at 17h30 SA time)
