Eastern Cape Premier Ms Noxolo Kiviet will tomorrow, 13 September 2013 attend the Ilima Fundraising Gala Dinner in support of Grade 12 learners. The event will be held at the Osner Hotel at 17h00 to raise funds for the Revision Camps that will cater for more than 23 000 Grade 12 learners throughout the province.
The revision camps will start in October and will see learners from marginalised communities gather at various centres to do revision exercises in preparation for the Final Grade 12 Examinations. The Gala Dinner is meant to mobilise resources and pledges from various sectors of society so that the needs of the learners including food, blankets and other essential items can be availed to them during the camp.
The programme was started in 2011 by a group of public servants in collaboration with church leaders who saw the shortcomings of poor performing schools in the province. They cited non-existence of a conducive environment for learning in communities as a challenge for learners. So they decided to take the learners away from their homes and the destructions of their communities to secluded centres where they can prepare for the final examinations.
