Premier David Makhura assesses service delivery and commemorates Vaal uprisings, 2 and 3 Sept

Gauteng Premier David Makhura will spend Wednesday and Thursday this week in the Sedibeng District Municipality assessing government’s service delivery and engaging with the communities in the region. Accompanied by the Executive Mayor of Sedibeng, Simon Mofokeng, Premier’s visit in the area will culminate in the commemoration of the 31st anniversary of the Vaal uprisings.

Premier’s visit is part of the Ntirhisano Service Delivery War Room programme, which was established to seamlessly deal with service delivery challenges in Gauteng communities. During the visits to communities, public representatives and government officials not only listen to concerns raised by residents, they also intervene to unlock service delivery blockages.

The Vaal uprising took place on 3 September 1984 – a day which saw the brutal killing of innocent people during what was meant to be a peaceful march led by the Vaal Civic Association (VCA) in protest of the proposed rent increases and rate hikes in Black townships.
