Premier Chupu Mathabatha hosts Youth Day, 16 Jun

The Provincial Government led by Premier Mr. Chupu Stanley Mathabatha partners with the SABC Limpopo in commemorating Youth Day. This partnership is a continuation after both Provincial Government and Limpopo SABC jointly held a successful Youth Empowerment Expo and launched the Youth month programme recently.

The Premier of Limpopo Mr. Chupu Stanley Mathabatha will give keynote address at the 2015 Youth Day Commemorations. Annually June 16 is celebrated as Youth Day in South Africa. On this day, 16 June 1976, more than 15 000 students gathered at Orlando West Secondary School to peacefully protest against the use of Afrikaans as the medium of instruction at schools.

Unfortunately the police and armed forces responded to the protesters violently and killed young people on that day. This year marks the 39 anniversary of the Soweto uprisings which will be held under theme “Youth Moving South Africa Forward”.

The Premier and well-known actors will join young people for a Youth Walk from Khwevha High School to University of Venda. This 10 Kilometres freedom walk is aimed at evoking the memory of 1976. The walk is also part of encouraging society to exercise and live a healthy lifestyle. We call on young people to join us during the freedom walk.
