Police Committee to be briefed on state of policing in Western Cape

The Portfolio Committee on Police will this Wednesday, 10 September 2014 get an update from the Western Cape Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Arno Lamoer, on the concerns the Committee noted when it visited Nyanga Police Station two weeks ago.

During the visit, the Committee noted among other things the low levels of visibility due to staff shortages, which impact negatively on the goal of reducing crime in the area. The Committee was further concerned about the lack of a clear plan for the patrolling of the N2 highway. The other concern the Committee said required urgent attention was the staffing of the detectives unit within the station, as only 56 detectives are responsible for 9 000 dockets.

The Committee will also be briefed by the Civilian Secretariat of Police on Domestic Violence Act Reports and on the implementation of the Regulations of the Civilian Secretariat for Police Service Act. The Secretariat’s financial performance in its quarterly report will also be scrutinised.
