Police briefs Parliament on current developments regarding Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, 29 Jan

The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Police, Mr Francois Beukman, says the Committee is scheduled to receive a briefing on the current developments regarding the leadership of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (HAWKS) in a meeting to be held on 29 January 2015.

Mr Beukman confirmed that a letter inviting the Police Minister to the meeting was sent to the Minister today (13 January 2015) and the Committee expects the Minister to be the one briefing them on this critical issue. Mr Beukman says it is important the Committee, as the relevant parliamentary oversight body, is fully briefed by the Executive Authority on the recent suspension of Lieutenant-General Anwa Dramat and the appointment of an Acting Head.

“It is important that the DPCI continues to function at optimum level in the fight against organised crime. The Portfolio Committee will continue to monitor the effectiveness of the DPCI in the execution of its mandate, and the meeting on 29 January 2015 will be an important part of an ongoing process,” said Mr Beukman.
