Parliament visits North West Municipalities, 17 to 21 Aug

Select Committees on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Security as well as Petitions will, from 17 to 21 August 2105, jointly assess service delivery issues in Ventersdorp, Tswaing and Rustenburg municipalities in the North West province.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, the Committees will start at the Ventersdorp and Tswaing municipalities where they will be evaluating the basis and impact of placing these municipalities under provincial intervention. The decision to put the municipality under Section 139 (1) (b) of the Constitution was taken in April this year by the provincial cabinet and is said to be based on the need to rid the municipalities of challenges such as poor administrative leadership, poor financial management and poor labour relations.

On Thursday morning, the Committees will shift their focus to security issues when they asses the functionality and effectiveness of the Klerksdorp Child Justice Centre.

From Thursday afternoon to Friday, the Committees will be in Rustenburg holding public hearings on a petition that was submitted to the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) by the Bafokeng Local Buyers Association (BLBA), contending land ownership issues as well as allegations of misuse of mining royalties against the Bafokeng Tribal Council and Bafokeng Royal Family.  BLBA consists of communities along North West’s platinum belt, such as Baphiring, Motlhabe, Bakubung, Bakgatla Ba Kgafela, Raphafana, Matebele Ba Chaneng, Lefarakgatle and Marakana.

Draft detailed programme is attached.
