Parliament receives report on South African Police Service oversight visit to Mpumalanga, 18 Feb

The Portfolio Committee on Police will on Wednesday, 18 February receive a report on how the top management of the South African Police Service plans to address concerns picked up by the Committee during its recent oversight visit to Mpumalanga.

Committee Chairperson, Mr Francois Beukman, said the Committee conducted an oversight visit asses effectiveness of specialised police units in Mpumalanga earlier this month. The Committee picked up some deficiencies in the manner the Komatipoort border post was policed. It expressed concerns over the lack of proactive approach in dealing with rhino poaching in Kruger National Park. Regarding the Public Order Policing unit, the Committee was not happy that this critical unit was not adequately resourced.

The Committee will also receive a briefing from the Director-General of Public Works on the status of facilities at border posts and police stations. “We were not happy about the condition of some of the police buildings we visited and we resolved to call the Public Works D-G and hear how he plans to fix this problem,” said Mr Beukman.
