Parliament holds public hearings on Women Empowerment and Gender Equality Bill, 29 to 30 Jan

The Portfolio Committee on Women, Children and People with Disabilities holds public hearings

The Portfolio Committee on Women, Children and People with Disabilities will on January 29 - 30 hold public hearings on the Women Empowerment and Gender Equality Bill [B50-2013].

Public hearings forms an important part of the legislation drafting process as they contribute to in making laws that are representative of various sectors of society. The Committee will listen and consider presentations from organisations such as Business Unity South Africa, Sonke Gender Justice, Women’s Legal Centre, and Businesswomen’s Association of South Africa as well as from individual citizens.  

The Bill seeks to give effect to section 9 of the Constitution insofar as the empowerment of women and gender equality is concerned by establishing a legislative framework for the empowerment of women. Furthermore, the Bill also aims to align all aspects of laws and implementation of laws relating to women empowerment in addition to addressing the appointment and representation of women in decision making positions and structures.
