Parliament embarks on Provincial Week in Eastern Cape, 14 to 18 Sept

NCOP Provincial Week to assess strategic infrastructure projects in the Eastern Cape

Permanent delegates to the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) will embark on a week-long Provincial Week Programme in the Eastern Cape this week, from 14 to 18 September 2015.

The delegates will be split into groups, who will visit various District Municipalities in the province. They will meet with the Members of Provincial Legislature (MPLs), Local Government Association (SALGA), Premier, Members of the Executive Council (MECs), Mayors and other relevant stakeholders. The theme for this biannual event is: “Advancing infrastructure investment and development for better services to communities.”

The delegations will use this opportunity to conduct oversight visits to the Strategic Infrastructure Projects in the province and to hold public meetings to enable members of the public to raise matters related to service delivery. All this, in order to enable Parliament, Provincial Legislature and South African Local Government Association (SALGA) to monitor the status quo of these projects with specific focus on:

  • Catalytic Projects – such as the Northern Mineral Belt, Durban-Free State-Gauteng Development Region, South Eastern Node and Corridor and Saldanha-Northern Cape Corridor, EL IDZ, Coega IDZ
  • Enabling Socio-Economic Development Projects – such as the Greening the South African Economy, Electricity Generation, Transmission and Distribution Projects, Bulk Water and Sanitation Supply Projects, Municipal Development Projects, Agro-logistics and Rural Infrastructure Development Projects, Urban Spatial Development and Management Projects, Re-organisation and Regional Integration
  • Cross-cutting Projects - such as Information and Communication Technologies, National School Build and Higher Education Projects – (the new universities, and revitalisation of public hospitals)

The Provincial Week provides an opportunity for the NCOP and the Legislature, to engage directly with citizens on challenges experienced by them. It further provides an opportunity to receive reports from Government departments and municipalities on progress made regarding service delivery.
