Parliament conducts oversight visits to Sol Plaatjie University and University of Mpumalanga, 25 to 27 Nov

The Portfolio Committee on Higher Education and Training will conduct oversight visits to the two new universities – Sol Plaatjie University (SPU) in Kimberley and the University of Mpumalanga (UMP) in Mbombela – this week.

After the two universities started operating this year, there was a policy on the expansion of physical infrastructure which was announced by the Government and ratified by Parliament.

The Committee will therefore be embarking on oversight visits to check the progress on the construction processes. The two universities started operating using existing infrastructure and plans for the physical expansion of both are underway.

The Committee will meet with the leadership at SPU on Tuesday, 25 November while the meeting with UMP will be staged on Thursday, 27 November.

As part of the oversight programme for the week, the Committee will furthermore visit the Northern Cape TVET College in Kimberley; both the Ehlanzeni TVET College and Tshwane University of Technology Mbombela campus in Mpumalanga as well as the National Institute for Higher Education (NIHE) offices in both provinces.
