Parliament Committee to hold public hearings on fishing

The Portfolio Committee on Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries will this week hold public hearings on the Marine Living Resources Amendment Bill. The two-day public hearings, which coincide with the National Marine Week, are in line with Parliament’s core objective of facilitating public participation and involvement in legislative processes.

The Bill seeks, amongst other things, to amend the Marine Living Resources Act of 1998 to make provision for measures relating to small-scale fishing and to the powers and duties of the Minister.

There are over 7 000 subsistence fishers active along the South African coastline, and the amendment will allow both subsistence fishers and small-scale fishers to be formally recognised in the legislation, which is before Committee.

The hearings will take place as follows:
Dates: Tuesday, 15 and Wednesday, 16 October 2013
Venue: Committee Room V454, Fourth Floor – Old Assembly Building
Time: 9h00 to 17h00
