Parliament and Provincial Legislature members graduate at Wits University, 2 Jul

About 57 Members of Parliament (MPs) and Provincial Legislatures (MPLs) will graduate from the South African Legislative Sector’s Capacity Building Programme.

The University of the Witwatersrand will award certificates to Members who have completed the Postgraduate Diploma in Governance and Leadership at a graduation ceremony to be held on 2 July 2015.

A further 19 Members have completed a Short Learning Programme through the University of Johannesburg and will graduate at a later date.

These courses are part of a Capacity Building Programme for MPs and MPLs initiated in 2009 by the Speakers’ Forum, in partnership with the National School of Government and selected institutions of higher learning.

The purpose of the courses is to enhance the performance of Members to execute their constitutional responsibilities as legislators, more effectively.

A total of 38 Members are registered for the two-year Master’s degree in Management in the field of Governance and Leadership at the University of Witwatersrand, offered from 2015-2017.  

The Wits graduation ceremony will be attended by the leadership of Parliament that includes National Assembly (NA) Speaker - Ms Baleka Mbete and National Council of Provinces (NCOP) Chairperson – Ms Thandi Modise. Also expected are several MECs, Leaders and Chief Whips of all Parties, NA and NCOP House Chairpersons, Chair of Chairs of Committees in Provinces, our delivery partners, National School of Government, Universities of Witwatersrand and Johannesburg and representatives from the European Union.
