Outstanding Health workers to be honoured

Gauteng Health MEC, Hope Papo will honour health workers and support staff that has shown innovation in improving quality health care at the annual Khanyisa Service Excellence Awards.

These awards were started in 1998 to recognise individuals and groups who have provided excellent service and/or developed projects and systems that significantly improved the provision of quality health care in Gauteng.

In selecting the winners, the judges were looking for individuals who go beyond the call of duty, who live up to the Service Pledge and the Batho Pele Principles. Displaying positive attitude towards patients, colleagues and the general public also counts in favour of the nominees. Other factors that are considered include effective management of work environment, contribution towards team work and upliftment of communities.

Amongst the nominees in the category of doctors and dentists, there is a dentist based at Rahima Moosa Mother and child Hospital who for the past 18 years diligently services the community. She goes an extra mile to accommodate even school health dental services and participates in the oral health outreach programs.

There is also the first Black Female Specialist Paediatric Surgeon in the Country who is based at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital. She was instrumental in the establishment of a program called “Ezabantwana” which has impacted positively in reduction of long waiting times for surgery on babies. The Paediatric Surgical department dedicate a week every year where marathon elective operations a done over and above the routine and emergency operations.

In the Cecelia Makiwane Nurses Recognition Awards, one of the nominees is a professional nurse based at Weskopies Psychiatric Hospital. She has displayed high sense of duty by going an extra mile in performing her duty and assisting other units where the staff compliment is low.

The officer is always readily available to take charge of hospital over weekend and night duty when a situation calls. She is also a champion for Patients’ Rights and the Batho Pele principles. Other categories are Allied Health Medical Professions, Auxillary Clinical Support; administration; General Support and Managers.
