Opening of the historic Gerald Bhengu Museum to celebrate the unsung artist’s legacy

MEC for Arts and Culture in KwaZulu-Natal Mrs Ntombikayise Sibhidla-Saphetha will officially open the historic Gerald Bhengu Museum as part of the Heritage Month events and activities. Positioned to be the beacon of hope to the Sisonke District community the museum will house 52 of Bhengu’s artworks which provide records of African life before the modern way of living.

This museum and art gallery was built in partnership with a range of stakeholders including the lngwe local municipality, Sisonke district, National Lotteries Board, Joan St Ledger Lindbegh Trust and the Department of Arts and Culture KwaZulu-Natal. This son of the soil contributed immensely in the Arts and worked under lots of pressure.

Despite the hardship this country was going through, Bhengu didn't let that cloud his thoughts about what he was passionate about. He worked with a number of people the likes of the late R.R.R. Dhlomo, whom he illustrated his text book ‘Izikhali Zanamuhla,’ just to name a few. His work can be seen in the number of local and international museums
