Nuwe Begin Phase 3 beneficiaries move in today

Western Cape Human Settlements MEC Bonginkosi Madikizela will be at Nuwe Begin Housing Project, Blue Downs, at 12h30 today to observe the moving in of the first Phase 3 beneficiaries. Another 286 units of Nuwe Begin housing project, in Blue Downs, Cape Town, are ready for the intended beneficiaries, and people who most need houses will be moving in over the next ten days.

Those who require assistance to be moved will be helped by the department or its service providers. They will also be provided with consumer education packs which include:

  • how the water and electricity supplies work
  • the beneficiaries responsibility for the payments of municipal rates and services
  • tips for home maintenance.

Once beneficiaries take ownership of a house, they have both the rights, and responsibilities of land owners, and are encouraged to take good care of their homes so that they will increase in value over time.

The Nuwe Begin project will deliver a total of 1 200 fully subsidised Breaking New Ground (BNG) houses. Phase 1 delivered 238 units between 1 June 2012 and 15 June 2012, and the remainder to be delivered by the end of April 2013, with a project cost of R218 million. The units include both single and double story units, and are part of a high density development.

Of the 1 200 available BNG houses, a total of 900 houses have been reserved for the Khayelitsha beneficiaries and 300 for the Greater Blue Downs and Mfuleni beneficiaries.

This housing project is a Western Cape Government: Department of Human Settlements project to create integrated and sustainable human settlements. Beneficiaries are drawn from the Bongani and Nkubela areas of Khayelitsha, and Ward 17 and Ward 108 in the Greater Blue Downs and Mfuleni areas. Beneficiaries consist of a large number of flood victims as well as back yard dwellers from these residential areas.

The houses include full undergound electricity supply and internal house reticulation, water management devices (WMD) restricting water demand and vibracrete fencing to combat wind erosion and create defined living spaces. The houses were built with 90% local labour and sub-contractors.
