Northern Cape Transport, Safety and Liaison hosts Taxi Driver competition, 18 Jan

The Northern Cape Department of Transport, Safety and Liaison will this weekend host the Taxi Driver Competition in the Province in conjunction with the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco).

As we continuously strives to ensure safe public transport for all in the Province, the competition will form part of our efforts as a Province in achieving this goal.

According to Santaco, taxis transport approximately 15 million commuters daily with 60% to 70% being commuting public and workforce.

The competition will simultaneously take place on Sunday in De Aar, Kimberley, Mothibistad, Springbok and Upington, respectively representing each District in the Province.

Santaco as the representative body of the Taxi Industry nominated drivers from each District to compete in the competitions. Each district will have 20 participants aiming to qualify for the Provincial competition.

The competition will also be a way of celebrating excellence in the taxi industry while also sharpening the skills of queue marshals and drivers assistants as they will receive customer care training to better improve the services they render to the public.

The competition will comprise of a theory test, road test and a yard test with the aim of sifting the most excellent driver amongst the competitors.

Sober driving will also be high on the agenda as drivers will also be tested for alcohol prior to participating in the competition.

Santaco, as the industry body, aims to improve the image of the Taxi Industry and believes that road safety should not be the concern of government alone but also the Taxi Industry and motorists in general. The competition will also try to show the importance of this unity with government and aim of saving lives through Road Safety.
